Painting Acrylic on Canvas "Post Boat to the Island"
"Post Boat to the Island" is a 22" x 28" painting - Acrylic on double wide canvas depicting the local Nova Scotian farming custom of moving sheep to the outer islands for the winter months where they will be able to graze on seaweed along the shores and will be protected by the ocean from predators. On land snow can be feet deep and predators ravenous without access to food. Feed must be supplemented with hay that can be hard to come by in a tough year. On the island, the sheep remain safe and well fed and are picked up for lambing season once the snow melts. The boat in this picture is a Nova Scotian dory used traditionally in fishing but also was the primary means of postal delivery to settlements on the outer islands. It has been repurposed here for stock movement.
